CIU Students went on a field trip

Civil Engineering students of Cyprus International University (CIU), Faculty of Engineering went on a technical field trip  to Boğaz Mining and Industrial Ltd. Company to see different cement types and observe cement production stages on the plant site.

The trip was organized by Assist. Prof. Dr. Ömer Damdelen and Instructor Shihab İbrahim to enable students to observe how the theoretical knowledge acquired in classes is utilized in a laboratory setting and on the production plant.

Damdelen stated that all students who will be graduating and who took Construction Materials and Reinforced Concrete Design courses participated in the technical field trip. The students were also informed about the occupational safety and its rules on the cement production plant during the trip.

The students were informed about the chemical details of cement and the different types of cement (Portland cement, Portland composite cement, Blast furnace slag cement, Pozzolanic cement and Composite cement). Damdelen said cement production technology consists of five main stages: Preparation of the Raw Material, Raw Meal Blending, Baking, Production of the Cement and  Packaging. The students had the opportunity to observe each one of these stages at the Plant.

In his statement, Damdelen said that the technical field trips are of great importance in terms of reinforcing the theoretical knowledge of the students, and added that they will continue to organize such technical field trips.
