Robots competed at CIU

The “Mini Sumo Robot Competition” was organized at the Cyprus International University (CIU) Science and Technology Center.

During the competition that was organized within the scope of the CIU Faculty of Engineering Robot Technique course and as an event of the Electrical Electronic Club, 11 robots competed.

Stating that they aimed to create an environment where the students could pour their theoretical knowledge that they have obtained into practice, Faculty of Engineering academic staff Assist. Prof. Dr. Ziya Dereboylu added that the competition was an enjoyable effort where the students developed their practical skills.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Dereboylu also explained that the competition was one leg of the Robot Technique courses final project, and via the assistance of the Electrical Electronic Club, they aimed to increase the participation from the rest of the university

Underlining the fact that the Mini-Sumo competition is a competition that is organized across the world at a variety of organizations, Dereboylu expressed that the aim of the competition, as with the famous Japanese Sumo Wrestling Sport, is to push the opponent outside of the ring.

Advising that in their competition, they had set a different goal, Assist. Prof. Dr. Dereboylu went on to say, "The basic goal of our competition was for our students to see how the robot they made works and for them to compare it with other robots".

Explaining that thanks to this competition, the students will have the chance to observe the results obtained from the robots they have made, Dereboylu concluded, “By developing upon the results that have been drawn from this, we want to encourage them to participate in world-class organizations that will be held in the future”.
