Photo Stories Exhibition by CIU

Cyprus International University Faculty of Communication students exhibited their interesting photo stories.
The photo exhibition was held in a competition format coordinated by the Student Development and Advising Center (SDAC) and the top five projects made it to the finals.

The projects were prepared under the supervision of Journalism Department Lecturer Nurten Avtürk and the Chair of the Department Prof. Dr. Jonathan Stubbs was in the committee that selected the top 3 projects worthy of being  exhibited.

There was a total of 13 works in the photo stories project, and Journalism major Adedapo Okikiola Adebare’s photo story called “The Life of a Dancer”  ranked first in the competition. In his project,  Adebare narrated  in his photographs the “Elite Flo” dance group, who had participated in the dance contest in Famagusta’s  Bedis Beach very recently,  starting with their preparations for the contest, their shows on stage and the performances of all the other contestants.
Jamila Khairulloeva, a student  from the Department of  Visual Communication and Design, narrated the story of the "CIU Spring Festival" using images of many colorful events held throughout the  Spring Festival.

Department of Journalism major Innocent Aigbe, in her work titled “A Day at the African Beauty Salon”, narrated a day in a hair salon where unconventional hair designs and techniques are applied, serving both male and female customers, and where hair care is done using materials different from African style braids.

While Kardelen Göksu, who was included in the ranking, narrated the historical places of Northern Cyprus with her old and new photographs, Emine Gül Ursavaş narrated the photographic story of Mavi Köşk. Bintu Balogun, on the other hand, won a place in the photography story project with the story of a mother with three children, telling about the excitement of the birth of her fourth child, the preparations at home, and the decorations the little girls prepared for their sibling to be born.

Nurten Avtürk also gave information about narrative photography, saying journalism and photography intersect at a point where narrative photographs gain popularity,  mostly telling a human-oriented story in photograph frames.

Avtürk also emphasized that narrative photography is the preparation of photograph frames like a portfolio and in a meaningful way, based on a theme or a period as in the  documentary making process.
