"International Sustainability" workshop at CIU

 “Sustainable Campuses and Cities in Tackling the Climate Crisis” will be discussed at the international Workshop at CIU
Cyprus International University (CIU) organizes a "Sustainable Campus" workshop in collaboration with UI GreenMetric World University Rankings Organization that evaluates sustainability in institutions of higher education.

The event will be held at the CIU Campus which has been evaluated by UI GreenMetric World University Rankings since 2018 and is constantly improving will start at 10.00am on October 7th  at the Çevik Uraz Center Conference Hall. Based on last year’s ranking, CIU ranks 71st  among 1050 Campuses in the World and 2nd  among 85 Campuses in Turkey. CIU is the only university on the island included in this Ranking.

CIU Board of Trustees Advisor and Sustainable Campus Center Director Prof. Dr. Serkan Abbasoğlu noted that the issue of sustainability will be discussed at the workshop regarding university campuses and cities, and added that CIU-specific information will be given on sustainable campus practices.

Abbasoğlu reminded that UI GreenMetric World Rankings is an important organization that evaluates campuses on sustainability and determines world rankings in this regard, and added that the senior manager of this organization Dr. Ruki Harwahyu will make a presentation at the workshop.

Stating that Harwahyu will make a detailed presentation on the UI GreenMetric ranking at the workshop, Abbasoğlu shared the information: "He will also make presentations on UI GreenMetric indicators, data submission processes and evaluation method."

Abbasoğlu said that infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water management, transportation and education are the main headings that constitute the basic categories of the UI GreenMetric ranking, and that environmentally-related social responsibility projects such as zero waste project applications and environmental activities will also be discussed at the workshop.

Stating that examples of local and international sustainability practices in the region will be presented at the workshop, Abbasoğlu reminded that the first of this said international event was held at CIU in 2019.

Abbasoğlu also pointed out that institutions of higher education should produce environmentally friendly and sustainable projects using rapidly developing technologies and stated that CIU, the only Cyprus university in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, is working intensively on these projects and that the projects carried out so far will be shared in this workshop.

Abbasoğlu pointed out that the workshop will be open to everyone, especially organizations working on sustainable living, and stated that they would be happy to host all participants.
