“Humanizing urban development”

Prof. Dr. Cemil Atakara, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Design and Architecture  of Cyprus International University (CIU) when speaking within the scope of  "World Architecture Day” said, "We must humanize urban development. In this context, we should shape cities not only as structures and roads, but cities should also be structured in a way so that they are sensitive to the social, cultural and economic needs of societies." 

Stating that World Architecture Day, celebrated in parallel with the United Nations World Habitat Day, stands out this year with the theme "Architecture for Resilient Communities", Atakara said that this theme emphasizes the capacity and responsibility of architects to create a livable environment for societies.

Atakara also emphasized that the theme "Resilient Urban Economies: Cities as Driving Forces of Growth and Recovery" was determined for the 2023 World Habitat Day and said, "These themes reflect the fact that today globally increasing uncontrolled urban expansion, climate crises, global epidemics and socio-economic inequalities threaten societies. They highlight the importance of resilient communities and urban economies in this era."

Stating that we can define this understanding as "humanizing urban development,” Atakara said, "In this regard, objectives such as respecting cultural heritage as well as establishing harmonious relations with nature and biodiversity were determined."

Atakara pointed out that an approach based on people's needs, welfare, cultural values and environmental sustainability should be adopted in the planning and development process of cities, and noted that cities should not only increase physical infrastructure and structures, but also the general welfare and quality of life of the society.

Stating that elements that will enrich people's lives such as accessible public services, green areas, access to cultural events, education and health services should form the basis in city planning, Atakara said, “In this way, cities become more human-oriented, sustainable and inclusive; the welfare of societies increase and provide a sustainable environment for future generations.”
