Environmental disasters may occur

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şifa Doğan, faculty member from the Department of Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at Cyprus International University (CIU) recalled that the forests meet the main vital requirements such as oxygen production and the continuation of the water cycle and drew attention to the point that there may be serious environmental disasters that will cause the destruction of the forests and the development of a series of other interconnected events.

Climate changes are observed due to the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere as a result of the increased forest fires in the world in recent years: “drought and high temperatures are experienced during summer and the high temperatures are among the main factors causing forest fires”.

Doğan stated that greenhouse gases released due to forest fires are acidic, “they can also change the chemistry of soil and water environments. They cause the balance in other ecosystems to deteriorate as well, by causing the living creatures to be affected negatively in these habitats”.

“Methods of combating forest fires should be developed”
Considering that all living things interact with the environment in which they live, it is obvious how forest losses after fires can cause environmental problems, “We, humans, are also part of this environment and after this destruction given to nature, we will feel the negative effects of these losses in the air, soil, water, social and financial aspects,” said Doğan.

According to the reported information, Doğan pointed out that the size of burned areas in the Mediterranean region has approximately quadrupled since 1960.It is clear that the importance of combating environmental problems has emerged once again and that especially methods of combating forest fires should be developed.
