Digital transformation in archives

Librarian Serkan İpekçi of Cyprus International University (CIU) Library, gave information on the digitization of archives within the scope of new generation librarianship at the panel themed “Past, Present and Future of Archiving” organized by the TRNC National Archives and Research Office.

In the event that took place in the conference hall of the TRNC National Archives and Research Office, İpekçi talked about why and how to digitize an archive and explained that digitization projects consist of stages such as planning, technical infrastructure and creating the workforce.

In his speech, Serkan İpekçi said the TRNC National Archive is the largest archive in the country in terms of the number of documents and the historical depth it has reached, and expressed the desire to digitize the National Archive emerged as a communal reflex to “protect” the past.

Emphasizing the fact that digitization of the archive will have many advantages and benefits, İpekçi stated that this will definitely act as the driving force for scientific/academic research as well as  publications.

In his speech regarding the National Archive, İpekçi said, “carrying out and publishing numerous political, economic, socio-cultural research will be  possible. Archive digitization is not a technical work; it is actually an intellectual transformation.”

Following the panel, Turkish and Greek book collections the Department owned were available for viewing. The event ended with a reception and photo shoot in remembrance of the occasion.
