CIU Students cleaned the beach for the Caretta Carettas

The social responsibility project "Let's Clean the Beaches for Sea Turtles" was organized by the School of Physical Education and Sports of Cyprus International University (CIU) and with contributions of the TRNC Turtle Conservation Association.

In addition to the School of Physical Education and Sports students, there were students from Faculty of Medicine and School of Tourism and Hotel Management who participated in the event that took place at Akdeniz Beach, one of the most important beaches in North Cyprus.

Prof. Dr. Ali Emre Erol, the Director of the School of Physical Education and Sports, talked about the "Let's Clean the Beaches for Sea Turtles" social responsibility project saying the event was organized for the Seaturtles which tend to act as the symbol of Cyprus, and are considered to be very valuable.  HE went on to say that “Our aim with this event is to serve the society, to raise student awareness as well as to raise awareness toward the environment.”

Stating that the Caretta Carettas will soon come to the beaches to lay their eggs, Erol underlined that they cleaned 297 kilos of plastic waste, 30 kilos of glass, 58 kilos of metal waste and 38 kilos of pitch from the beach so that the turtles would not face any survival difficulties.

Prof. Dr. Erol, in his statement thanked  Assist. Prof. Dr. Şükrü Rona, Faculty Member in the  School of Physical Education and Sports, who was responsible from the coordination of the event and other faculty administrators and students who contributed.
