As well as commemorating one of Turkey's leading architectural theorist and practitioners, Prof. Dr. Atilla Yücel who died in 2018, the competition in question aims to observe and examine historical / modern / local urban spaces within the framework of Yücel’s architectural and academic interests and his perspective on architecture, in order to raise the awareness of students on issues surrounding the preservation, development and creation of living spaces in these regions.

FFADA Vice Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cemil Atakara, stated that the II. Atilla Yücel Sketch Competition is being organized as a “Student Personal Development Activity” within the faculty, and went on to say, “The participation of the students will be documented and then recorded on their Personal Development Activity Transcripts. “We want to increase the motivation of our students, especially during the pandemic period”

Giving information in relation to the purpose of the competition, Atakara said, “We want to increase the motivation of our students, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic period. Additionally, we will enable them to view the projects they have produced during the semester from a different perspective”.

Emphasizing that they are focusing on the theme 'Locality and Change', due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Atakara added that within the framework of the competition, they aim for the students to concentrate, and gain personal and professional awareness.
