The CIU Sustainable Energy Research Center continues to increase its power

A cooperation protocol was signed between the Cyprus International University(CIU) Sustainable Energy Research Center (SERC) and the Energy Education-Etud Application and Research Center affiliated with the Osmaniye Korkut Ata University.

Within the protocol that was signed with the aim of collaborating upon scientific studies, education, and technical matters, also aimed is the encouragement or relations between the academicians, researchers, and students across both the centers, presenting the results of the cooperative efforts for common use, and to publish the research.

Drawing attention to the fact that the energy research center in question is the first and only research center in Turkey that has authorization in relation to energy efficiency, with the right to issue energy auditor and energy management certificates, President of CIU SERC, Prof. Dr. Serkan Abbasoğlu explained that with this regard, the center has a serious infrastructure.

Abbasoğlu emphasized that as CIU SERC, research centers are a means of guidance when it comes to the determination of energy policies of the country energy, and that within the field of energy, they have achieved a number of firsts, and went on to advise, “As an example of these, we can present the 1300 kW facility that was established in 2015, which is the island's first private Solar Power plant, or we can show the 2nd generation PV panels which were established in 2016, along with the “Science and Technology Center” of our Energy Efficient building, which was put into practice in 2017 and has 900 m2 facade cladding”

Highlighting the fact that it is important to increase energy resources, Prof. Dr. Abbasoğlu expressed that they are currently engaged in working upon a Biogas plant, where there is still ongoing work and where the permission obtaining processes have been completed, and noted that such projects are in actual fact live laboratories where students can see real applications.

Stating that they are also simultaneously carrying out studies in relation to energy resources and production as well as energy consumption, Abbasoğlu continued, "Accordingly, energy efficiency studies are continuously being carried out via the projects that our students are actively working upon, with the energy studies that have been carried out upon many of our buildings across our university".

Highlighting that in terms of energy practices, consultancy, or policy determination, they are a leading center, Abbasoğlu expressed that there is a new study that they would like to add, and that they desire to be more active in the area of energy efficiency, however the relevant law in relation to this is currently not in place and thus, they are working upon the preparation of this.

Prof. Dr. Abbasoğlu exclaimed that when it comes to the preparation of the said law in question, they want to guide the decision makers, and went on to state, “We also aim to increase public awareness. Most importantly, we will be taking the necessary steps in training competent “Energy Efficiency Experts” in Northern Cyprus, by continuing to work intensively upon energy efficiency.

Emphasizing that the protocol in question is one of the steps that have been taken with this aim, Abbasoğlu concluded, “I am in the full belief that it will be the means of fruitful collaborations for both universities”.
