About the Program

The doctoral program of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery offered by the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research at Cyprus International University aims to train advanced specialist dentists who can provide advanced health services to the society in the diagnosis and surgical treatment methods of oral and peripheral tissue patients, authentic, using knowledge by adhering to ethical rules, and lifelong education awareness.

The aim of this study is to explain the basic concepts and principles of dentoalveolar surgery protocols and postoperative management. Provide information about the medical history of patient by anamnesis. Inform about clinical and radiological findings, diagnoses and treatment planning. Deficits local anesthesia and tooth extraction indications and preprosthetic surgeries such as bone and soft tissue augmentations, alveoloplasty, vestibuloplasty and frenectomy. Students will be skilled on identifying oral surgery instruments, taught surgical tooth extraction methods, preprosthetic surgeries and possible complications, and informed about haemostasis, suture materials and suturing techniques. The student describes biopsy techniques, learns incision and flap design, apical resection, assesment of impacted tooth. They have information about postoperative maintenance and complications, learn bone and soft tissue grafts and grafting techniques.

The aim of this course is to teach the infections that may develop in the head and neck region, the microbial flora which is responsible for these infections, the anatomical spreading areas of the infections, the local and systemic findings of the infections, the drugs and surgical treatments using in the treatment of infections. The student distinguishes dominant microorganisms in aerobic and anaerobic bacterial species. Describes the spread areas of infection in the lower jaw, upper jaw, head and neck region such as submental, sublingual, submandibular, submasseteric, buccal, pterygomandibular, parapharyngial, retropharyngeal, fossa canina, temporal, infratemporal, cavernous sinus. Learns surgical drainage areas in head and neck infections. Applies the rational use of drugs in the treatment of infection.

The aim of this course are; to teach anesthesia techniques for surgery, to give information about anesthetic solutions and their mechanism, to provide, information about sedation, agents in premedication, and to give information about general anesthesia. The student responsible for this course will be able to explain effects of local anesthetics on nerve cells. Explain the general characteristics of the nerve cell. Define the chemical structure and properties of local anesthetics. Discuss the criteria affecting the selection anesthetics and vasoconstrictor. Evaluate the physical and psychological condition of the patient. Compare anesthesia methods. Gain knowledge of alternative anesthesia methods. Evaluate local and systemic complications of local anesthesia. Learn the types of premedication and the agents used in premedication. Learn the basic general anesthesia applications and the drugs.

The aim of this course is to define oral implantology principles. The student learns to diagnose patients for the treatment of edentulous cases and how to plan the treatment according to both the surgical and prosthethic concepts. Has knowledge about the the significance of anatomic borders, radiographic evaluation, alveolar bone classification and soft tissue classification and osseointegration concept for implant surgery. Learns bone regeneration strategies and biomaterials and grafting techniques. Informs about the type of the dental implant materials and their structures. Comprehends augmentation procedures, autogenous grafting and sinus lifting techniques. Learns the surgical methods of different type of dental implants and protocols. Knows the complications of dental implant applications and plans their treatment.

The purpose of this course is to provide the knowledge of the advanced surgical protocols such as distraction osteogenesis and surgeries of nerve injuries. The student also learns the methods of flap repositioning, maxillofacial reconstruction and advanced augmentation techniques. Has knowledge about the treatment of oroantral fistula and grafting procedures like onlay grafting, ramus grafts and symphysis grafts. The student will be educated for the TMJ arthroscopy and advanced TMJ surgeries. The student knows Botulinum toxin injections for oral and maxillofacial region such as masseter muscle injections for myofacial pain dysfunction syndrome. Learns surgical lasers such as diode lasers, Er:YAG lasers for soft tissue and surgeries related to bone and low level laser therapy methods for oral and maxillofacial region.

The purpose of this course is to inform the student for the diagnosis and the management of the traumatic oral and maxillofacial injuries. The diagnosis, appropriate management and prioritized evaluation of a life-threatening injury will be emphasized in the context of special ABCDE approach to a trauma patient. The student will be acknowledged about the clinical and radiological diagnosis of a maxillofacial fracture, the basic principles of soft and hard tissue healing, fracture repair, reduction and fixation techniques, the relative and absolute indications for open reductions and the particular surgical techniques used for the treatment of the dentoalveolar, the maxillar, mandibular, temporomandibular joint, zygomatic complex, maxillary sinus and nasal injuries.

The purpose of this course is to inform the student in a way that he/she defines a dentofacial deformity and designate a surgical treatment plan addressing this deformity by the means of orthognathic surgery techniques. The student learns the normal facial proportions and interprets the cephalometric analysis and anatomic landmarks to diagnose and classify the dentofacial deformity. Distinguishes the surgical techniques for the correction of maxillary, mandibulary, symphyisial deformities and facial asymmetries in sagittal, transversal and vertical planes, including Le Fort Maxillary osteotomy, sagittal split ramus osteotomy, vertical ramus osteotomy, genioplasty, segmental and subapical osteotomy techniques. Knows all the fixation techniques used fort he aferomentioned orthognathic surgeries.

The aims of this course are to teach the examination methods in the diagnosis of temporomandibular joint disorders, developmental, traumatological and inflammatory diseases, to provide information about the interpretation of all imaging techniques for the joint, and to provide information about the problems that may concern the intra-oral region due to this joint disorder. In the light of this information, it is to reveal the necessary treatment plan and have the knowledge and skills to perform the surgical leg of the treatment. The student responsible for this course determines the patient's problem and diagnoses the disease as a result of the necessary examination techniques and radiological examinations. Knows how to diagnose the problems and determines the treatment methods.

Students read and comment on articles about preprosthetic and dentoalvelar surgery, oral implant surgery, maxillofacial trauma, oral diseases, oral pathology, odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts, odontogenic and non-odontogenic tumors orthognathic surgery, sinus surgery, temporo-mandibular joint diseases and surgery, maxillofacial surgery, fracture treatment, head and neck infections, neuralgias, antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, rational drug use, cross-infection control. The aim of this course is to prepare presentations according to research principles by addressing topics on the agenda in maxillofacial surgery. The student responsible for this course examines the researches, case reports, meta analyzes, systematic reviews published in different countries and indexes. Students will be taught preprosthetic, dentoalvelar, orthognathic, sinus, maxillofacial and oral implant, surgeries, maxillofacial trauma, oral diseases, oral pathology, odontogenic, non-odontogenic cysts, odontogenic, non-odontogenic tumors, temporomandibular joint diseases and surgery, maxillofacial anatomy, fracture treatment, head and neck infections, neuralgias, antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, rational drug use, cross-infection control, and prepares a presentation on a subject of her/his choice. Then enters the proficiency exam of the doctoral program at the end of the semester being responsible for all the courses taken for maxillofacial surgery.

The student who passes the proficiency exam determines a research subject on maxillofacial surgery. The subject can be about dentoalvelar surgery, oral implant surgery, oral diseases, oral pathology, orthognathic surgery, sinus surgery, maxillofacial surgery, head and neck infections, or neuralgias. The study begins after the thesis monitoring committee approves scientific resource adequacy, hypothesis, ethics committee approval, material-method and the contribution of the selected topic to the literature. The student presents the data obtained during the research to the thesis monitoring committee at least three times and gets approval for the continuation of the research. As a result, the student presents his/her thesis based on scientific research principles to a scientific jury. If the student is successful in his/her thesis defense, he/she gets the title of PhD.

The purpose of this application is to provide the knowledge and skills in medical applications. The student who takes rotation in medical departments, first of all learns general anesthesia conditions and rules. Defines the vital signs of the patient. Distinguishes emergency situations. Knows how to establish vascular access. Defines drugs used in general anesthesia. Applies endotracheal intubation. Learns to consult the patient to other departments. Gains knowledge of intra venous sedation techniques. Knows the medical treatments applied in pain control. Defines premedication methods and drugs. Distinguishes the complications that may develop during premedication. Participates in seminars and meetings on general anesthesia, sedation, premedication and pain control. Takes part in the reanimation service and keeping watch whole day when necessary.

They can also participate in all clinical practice and training on oral diseases, oral pathology, temporo mandibular joint diseases and surgery, maxillofacial anatomy, distraction osteogenesis, fracture treatment, head and neck infections, neuralgias, antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, rational drug use, cross-infection control. Perform diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients who apply to maxillofacial surgery clinic. Support clinical studies of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program. Act as an assistant lecturer in the undergraduate education of the Faculty of Dentistry.

Elective Courses

Entry Requirements

  • The prospective student agrees that she/he shall apply to YÖK or YÖDAK for the equivalency of their undergraduate diplomas.
  • The prospective student agrees that she/he shall apply to the Association of Turkish Cypriot Doctors in order to become a temporary member.
  • The prospective international student agrees that she/he shall provide a Turkish Language Certificate or shall attend the Turkish Proficiency Test or shall study for a year for Turkish language education in order to continue their clinical studies. During their Turkish language study, students shall take one PhD course per semester for their PhD in Dentistry program.
  • Prospective students agree that she/he shall provide an English Language Certificate (IELTS 6.0) or shall attend the English Proficiency Test which is organized by the School of Modern Languages. According to their success, students shall continue to the first year of the program or shall study the English language.
  • Prospective students agree that she/he shall accept to work at least 20 hours per week during their PhD study and this clinical duty shall continue for 46 weeks per year.
  • Prospective students agree that she/he shall accept buying clinical dentistry units with a written commitment.
  • Surgery prospective students agree that she/he shall accept to comply with a two-semester (9 months) rotation duty in a full-fledged hospital.
  • If necessary, Prospective students agree that she/he shall attend an online interview about the basic dental knowledge of the relevant field.
  • Prospective students agree that she/he shall comply with clinical working programs with a written commitment.
  • Prospective students agree that she/he shall comply with a written commitment to obeying professional and ethical responsibilities and not to cause malpractice conditions.
