“Violence against Women” Poster Exhibition

A student poster exhibition was organized by the Cyprus International University (CIU) Public Relations and Advertising Department on the occasion of November 25th International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

31 posters designed by students were displayed at the event held in the exhibition hall of CIU Faculty of Communication Building. Students gave various messages with the posters they designed to eliminate violence against women.

Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, CIU Rector Prof. Dr. Halil Nadiri expressed his satisfaction with the sensitivity of CIU students toward social problems and drew attention to the fact that violence against women is a problem experienced all over the world and also mentioned the importance of the responsibility of the young people who should be highly aware of finding solutions to this problem.

CIU Faculty of Communication Dean Prof. Dr. In her speech, Aytekin İşman drew attention to the importance of the problem created by violence against women and said, “Unfortunately, as in many countries, violence against women is not decreasing in our country, on the contrary, it is increasing. We are happy to raise awareness, albeit small, by exhibiting the posters designed by our students in the fight against violence.”

CIU Faculty of Communication Dean Prof. Dr. Aytekin İşman drew attention to the importance of the problem created by violence against women and said, “Unfortunately, as in many countries, violence against women is not decreasing in our country; on the contrary, it is increasing. We are happy to be able to raise awareness, albeit small, by exhibiting the posters depicting the fight against violence designed by our students.”

Assist. Prof. Dr. Bahar Taşeli, Chair of the Department of Public Relations and Advertising also stated that since 1981, November 25th  has been recognized by the United Nations and designated as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in memory of the Mirabal sisters, the three activist sisters who were brutally murdered by the regime in the Dominican Republic in 1960.

Taşeli pointed out that the posters students designed, have raised awareness against violence, abuse and murder of women and young girls, adding "Our aim as a department is not only to teach students theoretical lessons, but also to raise awareness about various widespread problems around the world."

Speaking at the event, Aleyna Ünal, a student from the Department Public Relations and Advertising, stated that ignoring violence and remaining silent increases violence and that violence causes social traumas and constitutes one of the biggest obstacles to maintaining peace in the society.

Another student from the same department Ahmad Rahmani pointed out that violence can take place not only physically, but also in many other forms, and noted that girls in Afghanistan are deprived of their right to education.
