“Natural balance has been disturbed”

Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Engineering Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. İme Akanyeti said environmental issues continue to be on the rise in our present day and age, and “in addition to these environmental issues, the economic crises the world is suffering from because of  Hot and Cold Wars are making life difficult for everyone.”

Noting that the United Nations (UN) promoted the slogan "One World" as part of the World Environment Day on June 5 this year, Akanyeti said with this slogan, the UN called on all countries of the world to action  to protect the environment.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Akanyeti emphasized the deterioration of the natural balance and the decrease in biodiversity; adding as a result  of these negativities,  there has been  an increase in air, soil and water pollution all over the world and consequently the climate change that occurred in this context.

Akanyeti pointed out that in connection with these above-mentioned issues,  there are other problems such as increase in energy crises, problems in food production, and reduced access to clean drinking and household water. She also stated that these and many similar factors are predicted to cause great loss of life and diseases especially in underdeveloped countries.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Akanyeti also stated that it is important for countries to leave their individual interests aside but to remember that there is only one World and that “All countries need to come together to produce holistic, international solutions. It is essential to take the necessary steps for a cleaner and greener world by adopting a sustainable lifestyle that is compatible with nature instead of capitalist production and consumption patterns.”

Akanyeti dwelt on the Cyprus context, saying, “It is crucial to implement sewerage system in all regions and to treat domestic/industrial waste water with appropriate treatment systems.”

Akanyeti also stated that an integrated waste management system, which includes reuse and recycling, should be implemented, adding this will contribute to circular economy.

Stating that priority should be given to issues such as the correct management of hazardous wastes, structuring of public transportation, increasing air quality by expanding green areas, and protecting the ecosystem in land and water, Akanyeti said, “In order to take these measures, necessary legal regulations and control mechanisms should be implemented immediately.”
