CIU is organizing “Poetic Women” exhibition

Cyprus International University Women and Gender Studies Research Center (WGSRC) is organizing “Poetic Women” painting exhibition on May 30 – June 30 with the theme Cyprus, women and poetry in collaboration with TRNC Deputy Prime Ministry, and the Directorate of Cultural Office of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment.

Chairperson of the Fine Arts Education Department of Bartin University, Faculty of Education, and painter Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ferhunde K. Öner’s works consisting of portraits of Turkish Cypriot Women Poets will be on display at the exhibition for public viewing.

WGSRC Chair Assist. Prof. Dr. Mihrican Aylanç said the portraits of the following 11 Turkish Cypriot women poets will be on display: Urkiye Mine Balman, Pembe Marmara, Filiz Naldöven, Neriman Cahit, Feriha Altıok, Şirin Zaferyıldızı, Emel Kaya, Aliye Ummanel, Fatma Akilhoca, Nafia Akdeniz and Fatoş Avcısoyu Ruso.

In addition to the display of the portraits, Aylanç said there will be also 12 paintings around the theme of women based off of the poems of the Turkish Cypriot women poets. Ferhunde K. Öner very successfully blended historical structures unique to Cyprus, mythological elements, natural and cultural motifs into our poems.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Aylanç also stated that the illustrated poems will be read by the students of Cyprus International University accompanied by guitar player Mustafa Tozaki’s music, and that the exhibition will be open to the public free of charge.

Noting that the exhibition will open for viewing at 6:00pm on Monday, May 30th at the CIU Education and Graduate Sciences Center Exhibition Area, Aylanç also said that the exhibition will be open between the hours of 8.00am - 6.00pm until the end of June.
