“Brush your teeth twice a day”

Cyprus International University (CIU) faculty member Assist. Prof. Dr. Müjgân Gündüz from the Faculty of Dentistry pointed out that oral and dental health is one of the most important public health issues, and explained that the quality of life of millions of people around the world decreases every year due to this important problem
Emphasizing that oral and dental health is of great importance both socially and healthwise, Gündüz noted that brushing the teeth for 2 minutes twice a day and using dental floss will greatly help to prevent all these problems.

Assist. Prof Dr. Gündüz, in addition to regular dental care at home, advised that one should visit a dentist every 6 months and reminded that poor oral and dental health is a problem that can lead not only to oral health, but also to systemic diseases.

Noting that if the teeth are not regularly taken care of, problems such as cavities and dental calculus may occur, Gündüz said, “This situation affects not only our oral hygiene, but also our body health. For example, in the gums, all microbial organisms caused by tartar can travel throughout the body via the circulation system. In addition, besides gum diseases, other diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases and pregnancy complications may occur.”

Dr. Gündüz stated that the majority of bad breath complaints are caused by problems in the mouth. “Lack of regular dental floss use and tooth brushing are the cause of this problem. Bad breath that does not go away despite regular brushing of the teeth is caused by dental cavities and gum problems.”

Gündüz reminded that teeth color may change from time to time and stated that some foods and certain beverages are the major cause of this problem.
Gündüz noted that while beverages containing artificial dyes and colorants like cola, carrot juice, cherry juice, red wine, and pomegranate juice cause discoloration, beverages containing caffeine, such as tea and coffee, cause excessive discoloration of the teeth.
