Augmented Reality Applications

A one week workshop called “Augmented Reality Applications” was held by the Management Information Systems Program of Cyprus International University (CIU), School of Applied Sciences.

Director of the School of Applied Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Müesser Nat stated that the main purpose of the augmented reality application is to teach the School of Applied Sciences students how to use such applications in a way that will be effective and provide solutions in different fields.

Nat stated that it was not only the academic staff but the students also showed interest in the workshop. “We used the technology called MERGE cube in the workshop. With the MERGE cube, the participants were given the opportunity to examine the objects in detail by moving the cube in their hands.”

Nat stated that when the participants read the codes on the cube with smartphone or tablet applications, they had the opportunity to examine the object they saw on the apps from all angles by moving the cube in their hands.

Nat added  that one has the opportunity to click on the image in the application and examine it in depth.  “For example, it could be a human anatomy and  you can see his muscles, lungs, heart in three dimensions. You may have the chance to examine the human brain in three dimensions and play around with it in your hand, and even obtain more information with what  you see on the screen.”

Noting that such applications have gained popularity in today's technology, Nat emphasized that their future goal is to develop their own applications with such augmented reality and virtual reality applications.

Nat also mentioned that they can offer technology-oriented solutions to different business areas or institutions with the use of technology, and said, "Students will be able to find solutions to the needs of the sector and gain experience by developing such applications."

Stating that such practices are open to the public, Nat also pointed out that they can help those who want to gain experience in these matters.

To conclude, Director Nat stated that in the next phase, augmented reality and virtual reality glasses will be purchased so users can easily analyze information by wearing these glasses without the need for a tablet or smartphone.
