Center of Foreign Languages

Mission
The mission of the Center of Foreign Languages is to provide students with the English language competence necessary in order to be able to successfully follow their departmental courses in their field of study in departments. The Center also aims to develop students' study skills that will enable them to handle university-level work. Students are provided with active learning strategies for academic success, including time management, analysis of learning style, active reading and note taking.

The Center of Foreign Languages aims to integrate students into the life of the university through its extensive range of extracurricular activities.
In addition to ongoing teacher training and language programs for the CIU academic and administrative staff, the Center of Foreign Languages also aims to provide language-learning opportunities to the community. The Center also offers elective language couses to all faculties and schools.

The Center of Foreign Languages Programs and Procedures
While all students entering the university are required to have a good standard of English, the university recognizes that students may need extra support. Before joining their academic departments those whose level of competence is below the standard or those who need to improve their English before undertaking academic studies at CIU,the English Language Program(ELP) Programprovides an English Language course during the academic year (October-June).

As the medium of instruction at the university is English, students should study at least one semester at the ELU. It is the university policy that applicants are required to produce evidence of English language ability in order to be able to enroll in freshmen courses.

Level of Competence in English Language:
An IELTS score of 6.5
A TOEFL score of 550 (230)
IELTS - 6.0
TOEFL - 500 (213)

Students who do not meet any one of the above requirements must sit the university's English proficiency exam. Those students who succeed in the proficiency exam can start their undergraduate degree programs. However, those who do not are obliged to take the ELU Intensive English Program to improve their English.
The Intensive English Program is offered under a modular scheme. In this modular system there are four levels arranged in eight-week modules: elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate and upper-intermediate. After each eight-week module a level test is given. Once students complete a module of an eight-week period successfully, they have the opportunity to move up one module.

All students have compulsory attendance of twenty-five hours per week of teacher-directed work. If they do not succeed the level test, they repeat the same level. In order to take the February or June English proficiency exam, students must complete at least the intermediate level successfully. Students who succeed the English Proficiency Exam automatically progress to academic studies in their chosen faculty or school.

Teaching and Learning
In ELP language classrooms learning is facilitated through communicative approaches where students are provided with real life situations. All students are encouraged to try to learn English during their study period and to participate in intensive language work throughout their course. They attend classes regularly where they can obtain guidance. For further guidance they can consult individual instructors during their office hours at least once a week. In a typical week, all English language modules are based upon 25 hours teaching. Opportunity is given to practice the language skills. Students take classes in grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Our style of teaching, especially at the Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate levels, encourages participations in group work. Students also have class discussions and give oral presentations in class.

Most of the modules will involve individual study using the resources of the library, working at a computer center or at home, practicing the language skills through regular homework assignments.
