Foreign language teaching and learning are being implemented by School Of Foreign Languages at CIU. SFL consists of two departments, Preparatory School and Modern Languages Department. In these two departments as Preparatory School, we aim our students; apart from acquiring knowledge related to foreign language, to gain four basic language skills, to fulfill the requirements of communicational functions successfully and to use communicational strategies skillfully. The students, who are not successful in proficiency exam, are taken in an intensive course program. Prep school education occurs from modular system. One academic year consists of four modules which of two are in Fall semester and other two are in Spring semester. Level exam is conducted at the end of each module. The students, who pass Intermediate level, have the right of taking proficiency exam that is held at the end of Fall semester. In the same way, it is obligatory to pass Intermediate level to have the proficiency exam at the end of the Spring semester. The students, who are successful in proficiency exam of SFL, are expected to have sufficient level of Foreign Language to carry on their further education.
In our school, in the department of Modern Languages, foreign language education are grouped in three major topics:
1.The students, who start their department study after the proficiency, are able to follow the lessons in English, join the discussions and support the development of academic English.
2.Provide acquiring and developing foreign language to the students who have education in Turkish.
3.Provide opportunity to learn other languages apart from English.
