In today's globalized world, it is an obligation to have new perspectives in the development of law as it is done in all fields. Developing new perspectives has brought us situations as raising both international relations and also disagreements which is increasingly getting complex. Today's lawyer has to know not only the arrangements in domestic law but at the same time in international and supranational law arrangements and applications. By considering this thought, this department aims in priority to present a multi-qualified law education to the students. The main aim of this faculty is to have students who are going to have qualifications as; questioning the things that are learned and making researches, being ready and open in national and international competitions. Additionally, the aim of this faculty is to educate students, who are going to have adequate theory and application knowledge in helping citizens in this country to solve the complex platforms especially in international trading.
Nowadays, the terminology of “law” has a new meaning and content with the consequence effects of social conditions. Law, with the new terminology, became a new effective vehicle in providing peace at home and abroad. The changes and developments in this law perspective have been added to “lawyers’” old duties, by affecting the functions of the lawyers and by adding new duties to their responsibilities. In this respect the missions of the lawyer are; in what degree legislation, implementation and estimation areas take place in any part of social and economic view and virtually in what degree the events related to socio-economic life and mentioned areas, are concerned and effected by searching and obviously determining.
It is compulsory to educate the advocates of our country to be able to compete with foreign advocates. In this respect Cyprus International University Faculty of Law believes in having positive progress with the prospective lawyers who are going to be able to use especially English language skill with law knowledge, and having the need of “qualified person” potential in our country. It is obvious that, these kinds of highly qualified lawyers will have an important role in the development of country in terms of the necessary institutional cultural changes. Free circulation, which is a very important stage in terms of personal and occupational consideration of European Union integration, will be possible only for the lawyers who have information about regulations and are able to compete. Because of this reason, CIU Faculty of Law has given emphasis to the importance of elective courses by considering especially the EU and law integration.
Our globalizing world is getting smaller in the consideration of global integration and this procedure will go on. In this respect, among the several law systems there is a fast tendency of losing the importance but not the characteristics of some law systems. In this case, of course the presence of national and local law system and moreover, the evolution of them will continue. However, even these systems will not get their real power from local sources but mostly from general principles and universal scales. In this respect, European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) becomes Court of Appeals of abroad. In the Faculty of Law, the ways of domestic law related to trial methods are taught but the application procedure and methods to this court is not taught or not mentioned. Because of this reason, limited number of lawyers can apply and know about the procedures and methods. In this framework, CIU Faculty of Law is conducting a program, which is going to state the decisions of court to the effects of domestic law, by teaching prospective lawyers how to apply with the procedure and methods to European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) by giving Procedural Law courses, “International Human Rights”, “Law of European Union”, “Advocates Law”.
In recent years, it has been a global-scale movement for improving the kinds of flexible methods like the judgement procedure of arbitration board in the event of arising conflict, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) techniques and MED-ARB (Mediation-Arbitration); as a result of this the application of ADR techniques were introduced in many countries in the world. Arbitration, particularly in the United States, is implemented through the Federal Mediation Service and the American Arbitration Association. Also, approximately 95 percent of all lawsuits are resolved before trial. While arbitration is preferred mostly in labor disputes, mediation is the preferred method of execution-bankruptcy disputes. ADR techniques are preferred as it saves time and money to the both sides of the dispute by reducing stress. Also it provides contract flexibility to the parties. Therefore, ADR techniques are required to be brought in the legal system. For this reason, Cyprus International University Law Faculty endeavors the detailed investigation of the most widely used ADR techniques (arbitration, mediation, quick and impartial assessment, objective case finding, mini-trial, jury trial procedures, the peace initiative, a joint peace initiative and the advisory arbitration). Moreover, it puts forth an effort for searching the compatible ways of legal system and for being adapted. The Procedural Law courses and the "International Arbitration" are courses for this purpose.
The students are also taught International Human Rights, European Union Law, Mass Communication Law, Competition Law, Advocacy Law, Environmental and Commercial Law courses which are important issues of our day in the Faculty of Law at Cyprus International University.
In 2000s, it is required for the societies to be constructed as "knowledge society". Cyprus International University Law Faculty support the students' law education with computer-aided program. Besides this, students and academics are provided wireless internet connection to be a part of the information society.
The main goals of our faculty are to train and educate the students as one by one in groups by the direction of the faculty members and staff. Consequently, educational environment has been provided to the students in usage and improvement of their abilities and potentials in a best way. This environmment is not only for students, but it is also for teaching staff to improve themselves.
