The radio continues to be one of the trustworthy media tools today

Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Communications, Department of Radio, Television and Cinema Chair, Assist. Prof. Dr. Sevilay Ören, speaking within the scope of World Radio Day, stated that with its advantage in reaching mobile listeners, the radio has a wider audience, especially due to its integration with social media and digital platforms.

Emphasizing that due to the ease of access of the radio, it is one of the most used communication tools, Ören also added that as well as this, it is one of the most reliable media tools today.

Stating that from the year 2011 onwards, World Radio Day has been celebrated with a different theme each year, Assist. Prof. Dr. Ören noted that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization determined this year’s theme as ‘Radio and Trust’.

Ören pointed out that in line with the changes in the world, the media is also experiencing developments and transformation, and elaborated, “Parallel to these changes, it is important to maintain and increase the trust in the media in general and the radio in particular”.

Reminding that in order to continue the trust felt towards the radio, there are factors to be paid attention to, Ören went on to say, “In this context, the adoption of quality content production based on independent and verifiable information, broadcasting based on ethical principles, and the responsibility required by broadcasting and the awareness of public service broadcasting, are necessary”.

Drawing attention to the importance of employing qualified and educated broadcasters in order to increase the trust in the media, Ören expressed that Faculty of Communication graduates taking on more roles within the sector would be beneficial.

Explaining that when it comes to reaching digital information today, every individual does not have the equal conditions in this sense, Assist. Prof. Dr. Ören advised that the radio has the duty of meeting all the information needs of the listeners, ensuring they provide an equal opportunity in terms of access for those disadvantaged within the society, including the disabled.

Highlighting that the economic difficulties experienced across the world and in our country has affected the media sector negatively also, Ören explained that the radio faces these economic and technological problems and that steps should be taken immediately to solve these problems.
