Based on the evaluations made by UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, Cyprus International University (CIU) ranked 71st sustainable university campus in the world and ranked 29th in Europe.  CIU has been continuously demonstrating a successful pattern during the 5 years it has been included in these evaluations and this year CIU is the only university on the Island of Cyprus that got a place in the world rankings.

“This is the outcome of our long term planning and student engagement in projects”
Prof. Dr. Serkan Abbasoğlu who is the CIU Board of Trustees Advisor and Sustainable Campus Officer, evaluated the sustainability activities at CIU and the ranking of UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. He said that the contribution of students, staff and faculty members is a priority in sustainability which continues with a constantly rising trend, and pointed out that the CIU Campus has reached a point that the island of Cyprus can be proud of in terms of sustainability. Expressing that CIU has been carrying out serious studies in the field of sustainability since 2009, Prof. Dr. Abbasoğlu emphasized that most of the studies carried out are in line with the 17 items specified in the "Sustainable Development Goals" determined by the United Nations in 2016.

Abbasoğlu stated that within the framework of the vision of the Board of Trustees, projects that are coordinated by the Sustainable Campus Office and predominantly carried out by students have emerged; “The goal here is to ensure that the CIU family has a sustainable campus and to increase the awareness of the North Cyprus society about sustainability.”

Emphasizing that they, as CIU, have implemented many important projects, Abbasoğlu said that this year, in addition to raising the bar in energy, water management and transportation, they have succeeded in increasing the scores obtained in especially education and research, waste management and infrastructure all of which were specified under 6 different headings in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings this year.

Prof. Dr. Abbasoğlu pointed out as they were determining their sustainability vision, the goal was not to be evaluated by any organization that does such evaluations, and added “At this point, it is very rewarding  that an international and reputable organization has evaluated us and as a result of this evaluation, it has been confirmed that we are one of the best campuses on the island of Cyprus and one of the best in the region in terms of sustainability.”

Prof. Dr. Abbasoğlu to conclude said that our next goal is to achieve the 100% recycling process attained in water use also in recycling organic and inorganic wastes.  There is a constant increase in green infrastructure projects, and their goal is to be a carbon neutral campus in the field of energy and environment. Pointing out that this vision is in line with both the EU's Green Deal and the 17 "sustainability" targets published by the United Nations, Dr. Abbasoğlu thanked the CIU family and national and international stakeholders who contributed to the process.
