A workshop by a CIU Academic on “SIROMA Project” which is the EU’s one of the most comprehensive studies

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sevilay Atmaca, Lecturer of the Secondary School Education Department, Cyprus International University attended the 3rd International Education Research Congress. The Congress was organised by the Education Research Association and the theme of the congress was on “Peace Education in Educational Researches and Practices: Multiculturalism, Migration and Identity.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sevilay Atmaca and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Müge Şen did a joint workshop on “Multiculturalism and Sampling on Social Inclusion: SIROMA Project”.

While defining social inclusion in education, Sevilay Atmaca said “While inclusive education is one of the debated concepts of educational sociology such as education integration of disadvantaged individuals, equality opportunity in education or equality of educational opportunity, it is the process of taking measures to prevent social exclusion as well as to make social inclusion possible.”

Sevilay Atmaca explained that the SIROMA project, which has been carried out under the coordination of the 4 Ministries of the Republic of Turkey and financed by the European Union (EU), aims to "ensure that, regardless of the difference between all children, they are equal in educational opportunities and are able to benefit without any segregation."

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sevilay Atmaca mentioned that in the workshop, it was stated that the Ministry of National Education mentioned the non-formal education program developed at the Basic Education level based on the social context within the scope of the SIROMA Project and the prepared modules were also shared with the participants. Examples from pre-school, primary and secondary school levels were presented at the workshop; and some applications were done.

Atmaca said that attracting attention to the fact that there are a large number of students and teachers, who are adversely affected by multiculturalism, immigration and their consequences in the schools attached to the TRNC Ministry of National Education, teachers and administrators discussed the solutions for the implementation of the project in schools attached to the TRNC Ministry of National Education.
