A Project from CIU Academics on Evaluation of Heavy Metal Pollution on Irrigation Water, Soil and Plants in Agricultural Lands and suitability for Agriculture Parameters in Güzelyurt Region

Assist. Prof. Dr. Ertan Akün, Lecturer of the Faculty of Engineering, Cyprus International University (CIU) and Beste Arslan, Instructor initiated a project on " Evaluation of Heavy Metal Pollution on Irrigation Water, Soil and Plants in Agricultural Lands and suitability for Agriculture Parameters in Güzelyurt Region." The project was carried out in collaboration with the Cancer Research Foundation and the CIU-Biotechnology Research Centre.

Akün, the Project consultant stated that heavy metals were not dissolved in nature and when they were in soil and water they could easily be absorbed by plant roots and he said they could lead to various hazards, especially cancer in terms of human health by reaching people through food cycle.

Arslan, the Project Coordinator said in the study carried out with the support of the TRNC Agriculture Department the compatibility of water and soil cultivation with the heavy metal pollution of plants was examined. for the agricultural irrigation water from the Güzelyurt, Zümrütköy, Aydınköy, Güneşköy, Bostancı, Taşpınar, Doğancı, Gaziveren Cengizköy, Yeşilyurt, Yedidalga, Yeşilırmak and Lefke regions.

Arslan stated that heavy metal pollution above the limit was not observed in the irrigation water# however, the cadmium values were high in soil and collected vegetables. Beste Arslan mentioned that cadmium causes breast cancer and pointed out that it is possible that there might be a relationship with breast cancer and this topic in our country.

Arslan said that the source of heavy metals might be from agricultural pesticides or from natural structures of rocks, so they searched the origin of pollution and she pointed out that various weapons and similar equipment used during the war could also contribute to soil pollution.

Arslan said that such projects need huge budgets and she pointed out the necessity of collecting more samples and more detailed work should be done in the country with the contribution of the government and she added that their project study is in the process of published as an article.
