Restoration Process of the Balat Bulgarian Church was examined at CIU
"Balat Bulgarian Church Restoration" event was organized by the Faculty of Fine Arts Design and Architecture, Cyprus International University (CIU) at the Çevik Uraz Conference Hall.
Fikriye Bulunmaz, Restoration Specialist Master Architect and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Öztürk, Lecturer of CIU gave participants information about the restoration process of historic buildings. The Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Vocational School Restoration Programme students were given information about the relationship between the restoration project and practice at the conference.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Öztürk, a professional and experienced expert architect, said that they aimed to share their professional experiences with the students and she added that it is also an important event in terms of protecting historical buildings and transferring them to the future. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Öztürk said students were provided information about architectural solutions and implementations applied during the restoration process in a historical building.
Fikriye Bulunmaz, Restoration Specialist Master Architect said the Bulgarian Church, which was a 120-year-old building, was ordered and produced at a company in Vienna. She pointed out that this structure was Turkey's first prefabricated structure.
Fikriye Bulunmaz, explained that the restoration of the building was done according to its original, and she also gave students information about what should be done about the damages that happened and that might happen during restoration. Bulunmaz referred to the skeleton system of the construction and she emphasized that the work of art had a fragmented structure and it did not break its integrity as a result and it was able to survive at the end. Fikriye Bulunmaz explained that the bases were supported by the piles, the basement floor masonry stone walls have been carefully repaired and steel columns and other components of the structure were changed during the seven years restoration process.
The event ended with the presentation of a certificate of appreciation to Fikriye Bulunmaz by Prof. Dr. Nezih Ayıran, The Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts Design and Architecture at event held at the Çevik Uraz Conference Hall.
