Prof. Dr. Seçim, Dean of the Faculty of Communication, attracted attention to the importance of health communication
Prof. Dr. Hikmet Seçim, Dean of the Faculty of Communication, said in addition to cancer cases in the TRNC, 11 people died from the Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) virus , commonly known as swine flu, which has revealed the importance of health communication as a new field.
Prof. Dr. Seçim explained that studies in the health communication field began in 1970s in the United States, and has helped both individuals and broad masses in the prevention of disease and positive health promotion.
A wide variety of health communication practices need to be improved: health personnel-patient relations, communication among personnel, informing society about latest health information, constructive messages on media about public health, research on individual and community health risk communication, and public training of consumers and personnel on public health issues.
Prof. Dr. Seçim added that health communication activities are primarily carried out by multidisciplinary teams including health professionals, communicators and media members. He also mentioned that in Turkey, studies in health communication have been conducted successful for many years. In the faculties of the TRNC, conducting studies and publishing academic researches, will contribute to the development of individual and social health on the island.
