Maths Games Festival organized at Haspolat Elementary School by the students of the Classroom Teaching Department of CIU
A Maths Games Festival was organized in cooperation with Haspolat Primary School within the scope of the “Mathematics Teaching” course, by the 3rd year students of the Classroom Teaching Department, Faculty of Education, Cyprus International University (CIU).
Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir, the lecturer responsible for the course, pointed out that mathematics lessons are one of the lessons that cause the highest fear and anxiety among students, and she said generally developing a positive attitude towards mathematics is often ignored.
Özdemir stated that negative attitudes towards mathematics should be prevented, particularly at an early age. Therefore, she proposed to play non-competitive mathematical games suitable for the developmental characteristics at an early age.
Özdemir stated that they organized the activity in order to improve the awareness of the prospective teachers taking this course and to put the theoretical knowledge into practice before they start their professional lives.
Özdemir stated that mathematics teaching has an important place in the professional life of the teacher candidates. She said “They organised the Math Games Festival on numbers, numbers reading, addition, whole-half, geometric shapes, and patterns topics, which are the topics suitable for the 1st and 2nd grades at primary schools.
Özdemir recalled that these games were prepared according to the objectives in the curricula and the developmental characteristics of the children. She said the materials used were also tested in terms of suitability for the purpose and safety of the children.
Özdemir said that CIU added more value to the people of the region and the world every day and she pointed out that the vision in scientific studies constantly improves, and she also shared information that such events will continue in the future.
In addition to the satisfaction of the students and teachers, the satisfaction of the parents, who came to watch the game, attracted attention at the Math Games Festival.
