Digital Addiction Issues Discussed at CIU
A panel organized by the Law Club of the Student Clubs Coordination Unit within the Student Development and Counselling Center of Cyprus International University (CIU), focused on digital addiction.
Prof. Dr. Çağlar Özel, Dean of the CIU Faculty of Law, made an opening speech at the event, stating that nowadays everyone is a virtual media user and social media is an indispensable part of human life. Özel added that social media platforms can be of great benefit if used carefully and consciously. He emphasized the importance of accessing all segments of society starting from children, and of informative studies on digital dependence.
Prof. Dr. Asuman Seda Saracaloğlu, who spoke at the event, stated that education programs should forma healthy bridge between the past and future and she said “a field of education should be established in accordance with the scientific and technological world.” Saracaloğlu stated that the use of technology, parents, and the education system have a great role, and she stated that children are unconscious and with the right guidance they can use technology beneficially. Saracaloğlu mentioned that parents can control their children and prevent exposure to violence and aggression in the digital environment by utilizing a safe family package.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Şölen Külahçı, Vice Dean of the CIU Faculty of Law said that customers spent a lot of time on social media or games and they were breaking away from social life. Külahçı said that this situation creates an important danger especially for children, and she warned that there are those who encourage children to commit suicide or crimes. Külahçı said that there is no law on virtual addiction but there are provisions to compare.
