The Dean of the Health Sciences: "It is one of the most important duties of the society to guarantee all rights of the elderly people and especially women"
Prof. Dr. Feray Gökdoğan, The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Cyprus International University (CIU) made explanations about the social attitudes towards the elderly people and about the situations in which women live especially at an old age within the scope of 18-24 March, the Week of the Respect for Elderly People.
Prof. Dr. Feray Gökdoğan stated that elderly discrimination is caused by prejudices, attitudes and behaviours directed towards elderly people and it is perceived as a situation that should be avoided as much as possible and it is considered an equal situation to have a disease. Gökdoğan pointed out that the relations of individuals with their colleagues are weakened related to the age, retirement that weakens the relationship of individuals with their colleagues also causes a limitation in the social environment of the person at the same time.
Gökdoğan said that the average life span in females is longer than males and this situation is expressed as "feminization of old age". Gökdoğan stated that the length of life expectancy in women is longer than men from birth, however, this situation creates a disadvantage for women.
Prof. Dr. Gökdoğan mentioned "Old Women Discrimination" and she pointed out that many responsibilities within the family that belongs to the woman by conveying that the social and cultural definitions for the woman are shaped by the family and society. When compared to men due to social judgments; Gökdoğan emphasized that women have less gain, authority and advancement in profession and stereotyped judgments that exclude women from social life continue to increase rapidly at an old age.
Prof. Dr. Feray Gökdoğan, The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences said “Targeting to improve the economic and social situation of older people, and especially women, is one of the important tasks of the community to ensure that they grow old securely and respectfully and continue to live with all their rights in their societies".
