CIU Starts "A Student Personal Development Certificate" Programme

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Toycan, Rector Advisor of Cyprus International University (CIU) stated that graduate students will be awarded the Student Personal Development Certificate (SPDC) along with their diplomas.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Toycan mentioned that the SPDC is an officially approved document, which includes various personal development activities which students complete outside the classroom, stating that students must fulfil leadership roles, community service hours, international study visits, and internship experience in order to obtain this certificate. He stated that in this way, students could contribute to society in cultural and social areas in addition to their personal development.

Toycan noted that the SPDC is designed with the purpose of proving a student's learning, development, and various services during university life. He said a graduate will have a certificate showing their general abilities and success which will be useful for their professional life.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Toycan pointed out that the Student Personal Development Certificates (SPDC) are being issued only at Cyprus International University in the Turkish Republic of the Northern Cyprus. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Toycan stated that students have showed a great interest in this practice at all the faculties and schools in the university since the beginning of the academic year of 2017-2018. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Toycan also stated that the first graduates to, receive their SPDCs did so at the end of the academic year of 2017-2018.

Rector Advisor Toycan mentioned that the student activity attendance record covers six categories for out-of-class activities, stating "These are Campus Participation, Community Service, Professional Experience, Leadership, Student Awards and Service Learning.’’ Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Toycan also pointed out that in this way, the personal development of the students are officially documented, pointing out that all students who are actively involved in such activities will be eligible to receive the SPDC.
