CIU Raised Student Awareness of Crime

A Crime Information Conference was organized by the Psychological Counselling and Guidance Center (PCGC) affiliated to the Student Development and Counselling Centre (SDCC) of Cyprus International University (CIU).

Ersin Mertol, Chief Inspector of the TRNC Police School Directorate of the Police Department of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, explained the criminal law and police practices, saying that criminal offences can be defined as crimes, other than traffic offences, that have been committed in the TRNC. Mertol pointed out that any act against the law is a crime and he stated that crime is an act committed or neglected by law.

Mertol gave information about the general rules of criminal liability, saying the fact that individuals who come to the TRNC do not know the laws does not count as an excuse and those crimes will not be overridden. Mertol noted that each country has its own law and he stated that people entering the TRNC should learn the necessary laws. Ersin Mertol also stated that some behaviours and attitudes are not prohibited in foreign countries and therefore foreign students coming to the country should be informed about the TRNC laws. Mertol said that as a result of this kind of crime, the students' school life would become harder. Therefore, he warned against behaviours that would violate TRNC law and disrupt order.

Mertol stated that after the laws were published in the official record, everyone who has the ability to understand the laws was deemed to be aware of the laws, informing the students about the judicial issues and how a person could protect himself from theft, coups, and all other crimes. Mertol said that students' school life would be harder as a result of such crimes. Mertol, therefore, warned against violations of the TRNC law and to prevent any behaviour that will disturb the peace.

Gamze Atay, Director of the PCDC mentioned the purpose of the event and she stated that such activities were organized in order for students to adapt to the TRNC, thus they give them an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the laws of the country.
