CIU LECTURER MADE A STATEMENT ABOUT EUROPE DAY
Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, International Relations Department lecturer Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Direkli made a statement about "Europe Day".
Direkli stated that May 5th is the celebration of peace and unity in Europe after the 2nd World War and he added that there are two different dates that are celebrated as Europe Day in the world. Assist. Prof. Dr. Direkli explained that 5th May gained importance with the Council of Europe and he pointed out that 9th of May is another important date. Lecturer Direkli also underlined that 9th May gained importance with the European Union and he said “European Union day is also known as the Schuman Day”.
“The Council of Europe was founded to promote human rights and cultural identity”
Direkli explained that Turkey is a member of the Council of Europe and the Council of Europe was founded by the signing of the London Treaty on May 5, 1949 by 10 European countries.
He stated that The European Council was founded to seek reconciliation among peoples, to protect human rights, to preserve the rule of law, to preserve democratic principles, to find solutions to problems such as drugs in European countries he underlined that The Council of Europe is also important to build and develop a cultural identity.
"9th May is celebrated as European Union Day every year"
Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Direkli stated that after the historic declaration of French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in 1950, 9th May is celebrated as the European Union Day every year and he added that today both days are celebrated.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Direkli, lecturer in International Relations Department, explained that people are informed about the Council of Europe and the European Union and that conferences are organized to support the European Integration and he said “although the European Union prefers 9th May as the day of celebration for its visibility, because of the role of the Council of Europe in advocating human rights, democracy and the rule of law, it is celebrated in some European countries as May 5th”.
