CIU Faculty of Medicine starts accepting students
The Faculty of Medicine at Cyprus International University (CIU) is beginning to accept its first students for the 2019-2020 academic year, fall semester. The instruction of the program, which was approved by the Higher Education Planning, Supervision, Accreditation and Coordination Board (YÖDAK), will be in English.
Prof. Dr. Güldal Mehmetçik, the Founding Dean of CIU Faculty of Medicine, stated that the program's language of instruction is entirely in English. Apart from the foundation year, the first three years, which is the pre-clinical period of the six-year medical program, will be taught by experienced and distinguished faculty members in the field.
Mehmetçik pointed out that the basic education about pre-clinical theoretical knowledge, will be delivered by expert staff. Education will be student-centered and basic sciences and clinical units will be integrated.
He explained, practices will be done at the university’s laboratorories designed by the latest technology, on cadaver and human tissue during the medical education. She stated that the program was prepared by incorporating interactive learning methods.
Mehmetçik reported that clinical education will be given in the 4th and 5th years. In addition to theoretical courses, in-patient training, clinical visit, patient preparation, outpatient visit, operating room observation, joint meetings between clinics, seminars and article hours will take place.
Mehmetçik said in the 6th year of the clinical internship period of the program, the physician candidates will be taught at a universal level and all the knowledge and skills required by the conditions of the country along with the principles of preventive medicine will also be taught. She also drew attention to the fact that the students will take an active role and responsibility in all clinical studies under the supervision of the faculty members. Candidate students will have the chance to apply what they have learned under supervision of professors, before they become a medical doctor.
Prof. Dr. Güldal Mehmetçik said some part of the students' applied clinical training will be performed at Dr. Burhan Nalbantoglu State Hospital, who made a contract with Cyprus International University, as well as in other TRNC government hospitals, the Kolan British Hospital and in some hospitals in Turkey.
Mehmetçik mentioned students will be guided by the faculty members during the clinical training in hospitals.
Students, who will graduate from the CIU Faculty of Medicine, can work as a specialist physician all around the world by completing a general medical education or specialized education. She also stated that they can continue their academic lives by participating in masters and doctoral programs.
