CIU Academic Points out that influenza Spreads More Rapidly in Crowded Environments
Assist. Prof. Dr. Afet Arkut, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Cyprus International University (CIU), said influenza is a disease that can be seen in all seasons and he stated that, especially in crowded environments, it spreads faster and it is a virus type that can be turned into an epidemic.
Arkut said the disease is transmitted by spreading virus droplets by coughing, sneezing, or talking to infected patients, and it shows symptoms such as a cold, fever, a runny nose, and it is generally confused with a cold. Each year, the flu vaccine formula is renewed, so it will be useful. Arkut said that especially the elderly, people working in crowded environments, people with immune system disease, and health personnel, are at risk of influenza and a vaccination is suggested. In cases in which flu gets heavier, side effects such as pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsils, and ear inflammation can be revealed.
Arkut emphasized that it is important that those who are in the first 3 months of pregnancy and people who are allergic to eggs should not be vaccinated against flu.
Arkut said that flu can have severe progress in the elderly, pregnant women, people with weak or chronic diseases or those who have a weak immune system, and children. Arkut, stated that people should therefore rest a lot when affected by the disease. Arkut stated that patients should also use disposable wipes, sneeze into the elbow, and thathand, eye, mouth, and nose contact should be reduced, saying "the patient's room ventilation is also important."
For protection from the flu, the immune system should be strengthened, people should wear clothes appropriate for the season, and should be careful with fruit and vegetable consumption. Arkut also stated that people should not stay for a long time in the same environment with infected people and the use of common goods should be avoided.
