CIU Academic Makes Suggestions to Parents of Children who will Start School for the First Time
Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir, Head of the Preschool Teacher Education Program, Faculty of Education, Cyprus International University (CIU), made suggestions to the parents whose children will start pre-school or primary schools for the first time to ease the integration process of their children.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir stated that thousands of children will soon be going to nursery and primary schools for the first time in their lives and she said this situation is an important step not only for children but also for parents.
Özdemir suggested parents transfer the positive points that they experience to their children when they are anxious, saying motivational expressions such as "you will have many new friends in school", "you will play pleasant games with your friends" and "you will sing songs together in class." should be said.
Özdemir pointed out that parents should share the details that should be known about the child who will start school with the teacher and she also noted that contact information should be given in order to be accessible at any time. Özdemir highlighted the benefits of having the contact information of the teacher and meeting other parents and sharing their phone numbers.
Özdemir said parents can go into school or class with their children on the first day of school but they should leave immediately.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir provided information about the nutrition of children at school and she recommended that parents should put students’ favourite food instead of food that they are not accustomed to into their lunchboxes.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Sarem Özdemir, the Head of the Preschool Teacher Education Program said instead of lace-up shoes, shoes with hook and loop fastener should be preferred so that the children do not have any difficulty.
