A CIU Academic Gave Information about "Donation Moneyboxes"
Assist. Prof. Dr. Ertan Akün, Lecturer of the Faculty of Engineering, Cyprus International University (CIU) gave information within the scope of the "Donation Moneyboxes" project.
Akün stated that the "Donation Moneyboxes" project was conducted by the Cancer Research Foundation (KAV) and these moneyboxes were placed at different points in cities or at workplaces of different institutions and the income was used to award scholarships to talented young people. Akün pointed out that in this direction scholarships were offered to the young people who were educated by the Foundation and he stated that they have given scholarships to 7 scientists so far from the Northern Cyprus to contribute to cancer research with the income from donations and activities.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Ertan Akün also stated that he is a member of the Board of Directors of KAV. He mentioned that the Foundation aims to prevent all kinds of cancer diseases, especially prostate and breast cancer, to raise awareness of the society, to take measures for this purpose, to carry out research and to help scientific determination of treatment methods of cancer patients.
Akün pointed out that many studies were carried out in cooperation with the Cancer Research Foundation and the CIU Biotechnology Research Centre (BRC and he stated that they got project approvals from TUBITAK and European Union in environment and microbiology fields and he added that they have put signatures for work, which is important both for the country and the university.
Akün highlighted that the Cancer Research Foundation has actively been participating in such projects since 2002 and he also stated that many of the activities supported by the foundation gained continuity. Akün recalled the traditional Orchid march and he said that he hopes that the "Donation Moneyboxes" project would also be sustainable. Assist. Prof. Dr. Ertan Akün also said he is happy that as CIU they contribute voluntarily to bring to fruition the services and activities necessary to fight for cancer.
