Assist. Prof. Dr. Koçer Focused Attention on the Importance of Leukaemia Diagnosis in Children

Assist. Prof. Dr. Neslihan Koçer, responsible from the Child Development Program, School of Health Sciences, Cyprus International University (CIU), made a statement about the concept of cancer within the scope of Children with Leukaemia Week and she pointed out the importance of cancer diagnosis in children.

Koçer gave information about cancer and she said cancer is a disease that starts from a single cell and grows in an uncontrolled way, proliferates, and spreads around tissues.Assist. Koçer stated that cancer-related death rates are high and she said with early diagnosis and treatment cancer patients could be treated and their life prolonged. Koçer said that cancer is less common in children than in adults and she mentioned that cancer is the second most common cause of death in children in many developed countries and in our country it is in the first four. 

Koçer pointed out that leukaemia which is common in children was divided into two groups as acute and chronic leukaemia and she said these groups are classified according to the spread and growth characteristics of the tumour. Koçer mentioned the importance of early diagnosis and she also pointed out that the symptoms encountered in leukaemia may initially resemble the symptoms of influenza or some other diseases.

Koçer highlighted that cancer diagnosis in children is a difficult situation to be confronted by the family and children and she said situations like anger, anxiety, and depression have a negative impact on the treatment process and  affect the quality of life of patients.

Koçer mentioned that the children will  get more benefit from society when they are supported with the social difficulties they face during the illness period and she stated that their success at school will increase.
