Civil Engineering

The academic programmes of Cyprus International University Civil Engineering Department aim to develop students with design and analysis skills, management potential and a decision-making ability based on their scientific and technical backgrounds. The purpose of these programmes is to make our students aware of their personal abilities and the contemporary technologies present in Civil Engineering, to be entrepreneurs and to develop their creativity.

Programmes include topics such as planning, design, analysis, construction, post-construction maintenance and construction techniques. This information is used in the design and construction of multi-purpose buildings, bridges, transportation facilities, energy and power plants, hydraulic structures and the other buildings that ease the life of society.

After completing their first year in basic science courses, students take courses such as applied mechanics, construction, hydraulics, hydromechanics, topography, geotechnical engineering, transport engineering, materials, construction and construction management. The academic programme of Civil Engineering also includes maths, computer programming and non-departmental social-based courses. In addition to their practical education in the Department, the students are encouraged to make theoretical research.

Vision

The vision of the CIU Civil Engineering Department using projects to improve students’ oral and written communication skills is to develop engineers with a sense of leadership, with skills to carry out a group work, get them make experiments and to teach them to think and to enquire.

Mission

The Department’s mission is to turn out engineers producing solutions to regional and national problems, are competitive, involved in projects to increase society’s living standards, are modern thinking with ethics and aware of global transformation.

Educational Purposes

Cyprus International University Civil Engineering graduates are expected:

  • To be successful in the application of the basic knowledge and skills gained in a 4-year Bachelor’s degree programme and in the projects on national and international platforms (EP1).

  • To make an effort to create physical opportunities to apply original designs related to organisations and managements (EP2).

  • To give importance, as a responsible civil engineer, in applying ethical rules to all projects about the environment and ensuring the use of health and safety regulations in work (EP3).

  • To want to create employment to enhance society’s welfare and to strengthen the competition between institutions (Ep4).

Programme Outcomes

A student who completes the Course offered by CIU’s Civil Engineering Department should:

  • Gain the ability to use basic engineering knowledge in application, modelling and design (PO1).

  • Have the ability to be actively involved in group work (PO2).

  • Act in accordance with the ethics of engineering and business (PO3).

  • Benefit effectively from the modern and technical equipment necessary for civil engineering applications (PO4).

  • Identify and solve the problems in the field of Civil Engineering (PO5).

  • Be conscious about the necessity of life-long learning (PO6).

  • Be competent in oral and written communication (PO7).

  • Raise awareness in business law, project and risk management (PO8).

  • Have knowledge about the influences of engineering applications on health, environment and safety (PO9).

I want to study Civil Engineering because …

The continuation of the civilisation is only possible with the contributions of civil engineers. I believe that civil engineering is an important branch of engineering in the historical context of its contributions to the modernising of the world, the protection of the environment and natural resources, developing the economy, science and technology. I consider that, because of my education here, I will augment my personal skills and gaining a more creative, community-based identity and follow closely current and contemporary technology.

The purpose of these programmes is to make students aware of their abilities and the contemporary technologies within Civil Engineering, understand entrepreneurship and to improve their creativity.

In addition to their practical education in the department, the students are required to undertake application and theoretical researches.

What are the career opportunities?

Civil engineering graduates are obliged to develop an educational understanding that is close to that present in the market and be competent in adapting themselves to leadership and group work.

Students graduating from Department have a wide range of career opportunities as they can find careers in projects such as the construction of basic engineering buildings, bridges, roads, tunnels, railways, airports, ports, sewerage networks, water treatment plants, dams and ponds. They can work in public institutions, the private sector or in their own institutions. Since it the need for civil engineers will increase in the future, students have a high possibility of finding a livelihood.

Civil Engineering Department in Brief

Civil Engineering consists of the fields of construction, geotechnical skills, hydraulic transportation, construction management and construction materials. The CIU Department has a strong national link plus being present at an international level. It has a leadership role as its laboratory facilities ranks first among the other civil engineering departments in our country. It provides a quality education by using its physical infrastructure in the best way and giving prominence to the understanding of contemporary education.

Research and Application

Employers and company owners expect civil engineering graduates to come from an educational background, to understand the market and to be competent in adapting themselves to leadership and group projects. For this reason, the students improve themselves through conducting experiments on building sites offering all the necessary conditions. Supervised by their teachers, students take part in scientific projects that contribute to science and to the national economy. Students graduate with a high self-esteem, are self-sufficient and competent in meeting society’s needs.
